Nutrition Surveillance Data Analysis Karamoja, Uganda December 2009-May 2012

Between  December  2009  and  May  2012,  the  District  Health  Office  with  support  from ACF-USA implemented a UNICEF-funded nutrition project to reduce child mortality through strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Health in detection and treatment of acute malnutrition in Uganda. One of the expected results of this project was to have a functional nutrition surveillance system established and strengthened in six districts within Karamoja region (Kaabong, Abim, Kotido, Moroto/Napak, Nakapiripirit, and Amudat).

The sixth round of nutrition surveillance in Karamoja region was conducted through August/September 2011 in collaboration with District Health Offices  (DHOs). Data were collected from 15-19/08/2011 in south Karamoja  (Nakapiripirit,  Amudat and Moroto/Napak) and from 31/08/2011-5/09/2011 in North Karamoja (Abim, Kaabong and Abim).

The fifth round of surveillance in Karamoja region was conducted throughout May 2011 jointly with six District Health Offices (DHOs). Data were collected the  first week of May in North Karamoja (Kaabong, Abim, and Kotido) and the third  week of May in South Karamoja (Nakapiripirit, Amudat, Moroto/Napak), immediately after the National Polio Campaign.

Food Security and Nutrition Assessment for Karamoja Sub-region

In September 2010, UNWFP contracted the School of Public Health, Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakSPH) to conduct the Food Security and Nutrition Assessment in Karamoja subregion. Data collection was conducted during the period of 18th October to 2nd November, 2010, in the 5 districts of Abim, Kaabong, Kotido, Nakapiripirit and Moroto. However, sampled clusters falling in the new districts of Napak and Amudat were also covered.This survey was part of the routine assessments done in the subregion to generate information to monitor and improve programme and policy interventions.

Integrated Nutrition Surveillance System in Karamoja Region Final Report 003, September 2010

Starting July 2009, Action Against Hunger (ACF) received funding from UNICEF to build the technical capacity of District Health Offices (DHOs) in Karamoja sub region in implementation of small scale community based nutrition surveillance system. The system is designed to collect data at three intervals: beginning of the hunger gap (April/May), during the peak of malnutrition (end of August), and after the harvest (December).  In this report, we are glad to present the results of the 3rd round and trends of malnutrition in Karamoja.
